TLC Cambridge Manor is proud to announce a major milestone: we have become the first care home in the United Kingdom to receive the Food for the Brain Catering Accreditation – a national recognition of excellence in nutrition, cognitive health, and dementia-friendly dining.

This achievement reflects the commitment and collaboration across our home. Our kitchen and clinical teams and the Food for the Brain Foundation worked together to bring this vision to life.

Why Food for the Brain matters for residents

For our residents, this accreditation is far more than a certificate. It represents a thoughtful, person-centred approach to dining—where every meal is created with purpose and care, supporting:

  • Cognitive function and mental clarity
  • Mood, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing
  • Physical health, strength, and energy
  • Independence, dignity, and enjoyment at mealtimes

Older adults—and especially those living with dementia—can benefit significantly from nutrition that is rich in essential fats, B-vitamins, antioxidants, hydration, colour, and texture. By following the Food for the Brain framework, our menus are designed to deliver a balanced, brain-supportive approach while still honouring the comfort, familiarity, and joy that food brings.

For many residents, this has helped create a more satisfying dining experience, supporting appetite and encouraging engagement at mealtimes.

Celebrating the accreditation at TLC Cambridge Manor

To mark this accomplishment, Cambridge Manor hosted a special event on 21 November, welcoming Patrick Holford, CEO of the Food for the Brain Foundation, to deliver a talk on Nutrition and Cognitive Health. Residents, families, team members, partners and members of the local community joined us—making it a proud moment shared by all.

Our journey to accreditation

Becoming the first accredited home was an ambitious goal—and one we approached with rigour and shared ownership.

Under the leadership of Shelly, Martin and Silviu, Cambridge Manor reviewed every part of the dining experience, including:

  • Menu composition and nutritional standards
  • Cooking methods and ingredient quality
  • Supplier partnerships and sustainability
  • Training and confidence of kitchen and care teams
  • Hydration routines and daily support
  • Mealtime environment, presentation, and resident preferences

Working in partnership with the Food for the Brain Foundation, the team completed a detailed audit and delivered a structured improvement plan. This included:

  • Enhancing the nutritional profile of meals
  • Introducing more brain-supportive ingredients
  • Creating consistent mealtime standards
  • Strengthening kitchen–clinical collaboration
  • Embedding residents’ needs and preferences into every decision

Following implementation, Cambridge Manor completed a formal assessment and achieved an outstanding audit result—confirming excellence in brain-focused nutrition.

Complementing our dementia care approach at TLC Cambridge Manor

Food for the Brain aligns naturally with our focus on dementia-friendly support. Good nutrition can play an important role in supporting stability, mood, and overall wellbeing for residents living with dementia.

Together, our focus areas reflect a consistent care philosophy:

  • Evidence-informed, best-practice care
  • Holistic wellbeing
  • Person-centred support
  • Thoughtful daily living and meaningful routines

For families exploring care, this provides extra reassurance that nutrition is central to the resident experience—not an afterthought.

Good food should also be responsible food. At TLC Cambridge Manor, we take a thoughtful approach to sustainability by choosing fresh, seasonal ingredients where possible, supporting local suppliers, and continuously monitoring to reduce food waste through careful planning and day-to-day best practice.

This means our focus on brain-healthy nutrition is also underpinned by ethical and sustainable choices. If you would like to learn more about life at TLC Cambridge Manor—our dementia-friendly support, wellbeing approach and dining experience—we would be pleased to welcome you.
