It is an inspiring and actionable read for anyone shaping the future of care, housing and community design.

At TLC Care, we are proud to be part of a sector that is evolving to meet the needs of an ageing population through thoughtful, future-ready design.

Supporting people to age well is at the heart of everything we do. We create environments where residents can live with dignity, happiness and purpose, nurturing physical, emotional and social wellbeing every step of the way.

Bringing Warmth, Wisdom, and Community Together

With spring gently unfolding, our TLC Care homes are buzzing with heartwarming events and meaningful connections. From soulful spiritual gatherings to lively Sunday lunches, we’ve been celebrating the joy of community in every way possible.

The much-loved Host Your Roast event, which began at Camberley Manor last year, has blossomed across several of our homes including Cooperscroft, Cherry Hinton, Carlton Court, Cambridge Manor, and Cuffley Manor. A delicious roast lunch served with live music and laughter, this special Sunday affair has quickly become a cherished tradition—bringing together families, residents, and local communities for an afternoon of warmth and cheer.

At Cuffley Manor, residents and neighbours took to Oakmere Park for a community walk that was as much about connection as it was about movement. As one resident beautifully put it, “It’s been absolutely lovely to meet new people and feel so connected to nature.” In partnership with Hertfordshire Health Walks, the stroll brought joy, conversation, and a shared appreciation of the outdoors.

Kailash Manor’s monthly Bhagavad Gita Wisdom Circle continues to inspire, offering a peaceful space for spiritual reflection in collaboration with ISKCON Bhaktivedanta Manor. Guided by experienced devotees, these gatherings offer a rare opportunity for intergenerational learning, connection, and inner peace.

Meanwhile, Karuna Manor has launched the deeply moving Spiritual Dementia Café, also in partnership with the Hare Krishna Temple. Blending devotional music, meditation, and storytelling, this holistic initiative has brought comfort, joy, and familiarity to individuals living with dementia and their families. The positive response has been overwhelming, and the sessions will now run bi-monthly.

At TLC Care, every event is a step towards building community, enriching lives, and spreading joy. We look forward to welcoming you to our upcoming celebrations this spring!

Candlewood House is proud to announce its partnership with the National Garden Scheme (NGS), an initiative that champions the beauty and therapeutic benefits of gardening while raising funds for vital nursing and health charities. Since its founding, the NGS has raised over £70 million for organisations like Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, and Hospice UK, including an impressive £3.4 million in 2023 alone.

Candlewood House Care Home

At Candlewood House, the garden is more than just a space—it’s a sanctuary. Designed to enhance residents’ physical and mental wellbeing, the garden features sensory plants, seasonal flowers, and quiet corners for relaxation and reflection. Residents enjoy engaging in gardening activities, socialising in the serene setting, and finding comfort in the beauty of nature. It’s a source of joy and pride for the home, fostering community spirit and connection.

This collaboration is close to the heart of TLC Care, reflecting its ethos of creating environments where people can thrive and supporting causes that align with its values. By opening its gardens to the public, Candlewood House invites the community to experience the transformative power of green spaces and contribute to the NGS’s charitable mission.

Join us on the 11th of July 2025, 10th of August 2025, 7th of September 2025 and step into the tranquillity of Candlewood House’s gardens during our open days, hosted in partnership with the National Garden Scheme. Stroll through our vibrant flower beds and sensory plant displays, savour tea and homemade sandwiches, and immerse yourself in the warmth of our community. This is a unique opportunity to meet our residents and team, share stories, and support a fantastic cause, with all donations going to the NGS to fund vital nursing and health charities.

We look forward to welcoming you to Candlewood House as we come together to celebrate the joy of gardening and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need. Let’s grow a brighter future, one garden at a time.

A visitor from the community was particularly taken with a stall manned by a Camberley Manor resident selling his very own homemade wooden crafts. He told us “It is very empowering to see a resident still doing what he loves the most, and interacting with people of all ages to showcase his skills.”

On Saturday 24th August, Camberley Manor care home hosted a party for residents, relatives and the local neighbourhood joined by Surrey Heath Mayor, Cllr. Sarbie King.

The afternoon included a magic show by Lee Florida, face painting, live music from local talent Natasha, and classic cars on display provided by members of Fleet Classic Car Club.

The tombola proved popular, which received gifted prizes from many local businesses and friends of the home, and raised over £360 which will be donated to Parkinson’s UK.

A relative of one of the care home’s residents, Mary Woods, shared “the weather was unkind, but it definitely didn’t dampen our spirits or the atmosphere. Everyone came together to enjoy the entertainment and we have thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Difference between residential care & nursing care

At TLC Care, our residents in Nursing Care receive specialist support from qualified and registered nurses who deliver medical aid for those who have a medical condition or require necessary medication and extra support. Whereas our Residential Care provides assistance to residents with daily living activities in a home-like setting. Residential Care does not have the same level of medical oversight and is more suited for individuals who want to live independently but still have easy access to additional support. At TLC Care we value and promote independence for all our residents whether they are in Residential Care or Nursing Care.

Residents receiving specialist Nursing Care and Residential Care, are supported by our friendly and dedicated teams 24 hours, 365 days a year, so you or your loved one never need to worry about feeling unsupported. Our specialist team understand the importance of great quality of life, hence providing support and encouraging the residents to engage in their favourite hobbies and participate in social activities to maintain good physical well-being, as well as a plethora of social interaction opportunities to meet new people and make new friends. In our residential homes and nursing homes, there are a variety of different events and activities occurring throughout the calendar month so there is always something to do and keep our residents entertained.

Tailored support and personalised care

Each resident at TLC Care goes through a friendly care needs assessment before coming to the home in order to see what type of care will be appropriate to meet the individual needs, and tailor customised care plans according to the level of support required. At TLC Care we value and promote independence and social engagement for our residents, so the level of support and personal care can be adjusted to the resident’s discretion. At TLC Care we believe it is important to promote independent living and social engagements to elderly people through personalised care support services and social activities, but also consider the individual’s preferences and lifestyle choices when customising the care plan.

It is never easy knowing a loved one or family member is living with dementia. Oftentimes, it can be a challenge to deal with emotions and a difficult decision of how best to look after and care for someone living with dementia. Dementia progresses over time so it is important to seek the right support to ensure the best wellbeing for the person with dementia. The right supportive environment is necessary to help people with a dementia diagnosis live their best lives, which is why at TLC Care, we are here to support both you and your loved one with the diagnosis. Dementia care in a care home is very different from trying to receive support from local resources like local services and admiral nurses, online forums or a support line. Dementia care in a care home provides tailored personal care that focuses not only on enhancing the quality of life for people with dementia to cope with the progressive diagnosis but also offers 24-hour emotional support, a compassionate environment as well as support for physical well-being.

Understanding the dementia diagnosis

As everyone is unique and different, dementia affects people differently and presents itself in many different ways. Dementia is the deterioration of cognitive functioning to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. The signs are different from person to person, which is why it can be a challenge to diagnose the exact signs of the disease. This being said, there are some common symptoms spotted early on in dementia patients, such as short-term memory loss, confusion, changes in attention span, worsened communication skills and judgment, and struggle with completing daily functioning. Indications of these signs within a real-life setting could include forgetting the names of close family or friends, struggling to remember things that have been said or happened recently, as well as struggling to complete regular tasks independently.

There are different types of dementia, the most common of which is Alzheimer’s disease which is caused by particular changes in brain function, which initially affect a person’s short-term memory and then impacts long-term memory loss and causing difficulties with walking and talking affecting the independence of conducting daily tasks individually. Other common types of dementia include Vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, Frontotemporal dementia and Mixed dementia, all of which have a negative effect on the brain.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for dementia, however certain medications, treatments, and personalised dementia care can help to maintain a better level of cognitive function for a longer time, but is important to understand that this does not stop the underlying progressive damage happening in the brain.

Effective communication strategies

Sometimes communicating with someone with dementia can feel overwhelming. There are effective communication tips and strategies that help with the interaction with the person living with dementia. It is important to speak slowly and clearly as well as maintain eye contact to facilitate understanding and connection. It can sometimes be hard for family members, friends and other carers to communicate effectively, so it is important to remember to remain patient, listen and empathetic and have good control of feelings and emotions in order to foster a sense of security and trust with the loved one with dementia. Examples of nonverbal cues for effective communication that let the person with dementia feel heard and valued include actions such as nodding, smiling, and offering reassurance.

When should someone with dementia move into professional care?

Everyone is different when it comes to living with dementia, however, once someone is struggling to complete everyday tasks on their own is typically an indicator that they require additional support to be able to live well and not be restricted by this diagnosis. The progressiveness of the disease can also be too much for an in-home care carer which is when it would be a good idea to move into a care home where there is 24-hour dementia caring empathetic staff on hand for support. Moving into a professional care home does not necessarily need to be done once the person with dementia cannot complete everyday tasks on their own, but may feel they need emotional support and this person prefers to be around others. Moving into a care home allows the person to be in a supportive community with others who are struggling with the same thing, and is a great way to seek out mental support.

Supporting someone with dementia

For those looking after someone with dementia, it is important to provide compassionate care and support for the best well-being and quality of life for that individual no matter the stage or severity of the dementia. For families living with a loved one with dementia, it is important to educate themselves about dementia, seek professional guidance who can offer advice, and implement practical strategies to ensure the right care is given. It is important to note that dementia does get worse with time so there should be a point to consider seeking out professional care like a specialised dementia care home to ensure the safety and well-being of the person with dementia.

There are many benefits care homes provide for the elderly, one of which is being able to be part of a community. Care homes for the elderly heavily focus on the wellbeing of their residents, where being part of a community and participating in communal activities can have a positive effect on the elderly for their physical, social and mental health. This article further unpicks the benefits of joining a community within care homes for the elderly.

A way to stay social in a safe environment

For all individuals, staying socially active is important for reducing mental health problems. This can be particularly difficult for those independent living elderly citizens, who can find it hard to socialise with their loved ones and partake in social activities in the local community. This challenge can be due to several reasons, like mobility difficulties, other health concerns and a fear of possible unsafe situations that may arise. Care homes for the elderly can eliminate these feelings of loneliness and provide safe, accessible communities to make friends and increase social life for the elderly. At TLC Care, we encourage the elderly residents in our care home to join our many friendly communities, socialise with like-minded people and meet new friends, all within a safe and secure care home environment.

TLC Care proudly presents 9 care homes across 4 large areas in the UK, providing professional friendly elderly care covering North London, Surrey, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire

TLC Care group of care homes also offers a variety of elderly care homes, such as our care homes that cherish the Hindu culture – Karuna Manor and Kailash Manor, located in North London. The Hindu culture can be noticed from the interior design to the food, and celebrate Hindu traditions and ceremonies. Our group supports residential care, nursing care, dementia care and respite care, all of which are supported by our registered nurses and qualified careers.

Every elderly resident across all our residential and nursing care homes has a unique tailored care plan, with the objective and intent to provide the elderly with the best care services and promote a healthy active and social lifestyle. Feel free to come and book a visit to our care homes for the elderly at TLC Care, to see if they are the right care home for you or your loved one.

Continue enjoying your hobbies while surrounded by a warm community

As much scientific literature shows, it is important for the elderly to stay active, which supports mental and physical health. For example, staying active can help reduce the risk of major illnesses, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer for the elderly. Research also shows social connection with others can help the elderly improve their ability to recover from stress, anxiety, and depression. It can be particularly challenging for the elderly who live independently to be able to socialise and partake in activities, events and hobbies when they have the responsibility of cooking and looking after their home. In all our care homes, the elderly residents can fully enjoy a well-catered healthy diet and participate in activities and hobbies, to build an active lifestyle and social life, while being supported by our professional-friendly careers and warm social community.

Continue living your life independently, while having access to experienced care teams

Being in a care home certainly does not restrict independence. At TLC Care, across all of our homes, elderly residents can independently enjoy different onsite facilities in a safe environment, without having to leave the home. Such facilities include on-site hair and beauty salons, cafes, pubs, restaurants, mini-golf courses and plenty more. For instance, the Cambridge care homes host the dementia cafe, which is a dementia support group occurring every month in their cosy cafe, empowering residents to come and enjoy a cup of tea, talk and exchange knowledge, ideas and experiences.

Joining a community gives residents the independence to organise their own time, continue their regular routines, enjoy their hobbies and participate in activities and social events on-site. All of this is done in a safe community with our experienced care teams there to provide the right support for each elderly resident.

To summarise, the benefits of joining a community for the elderly in a care home have a vast amount of positive rewards, ensuring the elderly residents’ physical, social and mental needs are met. Through all our residential and nursing care homes and the support from our friendly staff, the elderly residents can focus on enjoying themselves independently within a social community, while partaking in the activities that are onsite in a secure home. If you are somewhat curious, you are welcome to book a visit to view our care homes for the elderly at TLC Care, to see if it is the right care home for you or your loved one.

While Easter may have passed, the spirit of giving and community engagement continues to thrive at TLC Care Homes. Over the weekend, TLC Care’s Cambridge Manor, Cherry Hinton, Camberley Manor, Cuffley Manor, Kailash Manor and Cooperscroft Care Homes extended the warmth of the holiday season through a series of heartwarming Easter Eggstravaganza that touched the lives of many.

In a collective effort, residents, team members and community came together to make a meaningful impact. From Cuffley Manor Care Home, where 75 eggs were collected and donated to the Borehamwood and Potters Bar food banks, to Camberley Manor’s donation of over 110 eggs to local causes such as the paediatric ward at Frimley Park Hospital and The Hope Hub Camberley, the outpouring of generosity was truly remarkable. Additionally, our Business Development Manager at Kailash Manor Care Home, Raj Kerai, delivered Easter Eggs to Northwick Park Hospital’s Rainbow Ward, spreading joy to children in need.

Cooperscroft Care Home, in collaboration with the 12 Apostles Greek Church, delivered 107 Easter eggs to families in need through the church’s food bank, embodying the spirit of compassion and community support. This initiative epitomises TLC Care’s commitment to making a positive impact beyond their immediate surroundings, as Dawn Cawley, Business Development Manager at Cooperscroft Care Home, articulates, “Easter is a time of fun, celebration, and joy, and we believe every person deserves to experience the magic of the season, regardless of their circumstances.”
