MP Helen Whately, Minister for Care at the Department of Health and Social Care, visits TLC Care’s Karuna Manor care home in Harrow and greeted with fresh flower garland.

Yesterday, the Minister of Social Care Helen Whately MP made her first visit to a care home since COVID-19 in support of Care Home Open Week. The Minister’s visit to Karuna Manor Care Home in Harrow, London, was allowed to move forward with an intensive COVID-19 safety procedure and a 99% vaccination rate amongst residents. Karuna Manor, along with the other TLC Care Homes is one of more than 400 care homes participating in this year’s Care Home Open Week.

The Minister took part in a Mindfulness session with residents and had a tour of Karuna Manor where she met residents, visiting families and team members who work within the home. Minister Whately was welcomed to the care home with traditional floral garland, as each resident who moves into the home is, and took home a taste of Karuna from the resident chef.

Ruth Kigaa, Karuna Manor Manager, commented,

“Care Home Open Week has brought more excitement to our Home than we could have imagined. We would like to express our gratitude to the TLC team and our friends and family who have shown us continued support during the pandemic. All of us at Karuna Manor are privileged to host Minister Helen Whately into our home and it was wonderful to watch her partake in our mindfulness session with our residents.”

Minister Helen Whately took to Twitter after the event and wrote: “Fabulous to visit Karuna Manor Care Home to see what a wonderful job they are doing caring for residents – and to hear from relatives how the care home has kept them in contact during the pandemic.

Care Home Open Week, from June 28th-July 4th, encourages communities to celebrate and thank care workers who remained on the frontline throughout the pandemic and showcase the resilience of the many unique care home residents. Many events held during the week will connect communities to their local care homes through volunteering events or informational discussions about the care sector.

Jonathan Freeman, CEO of the CareTech Foundation, Founding Patron of Championing Social Care said,

“Social care is provided in so many settings up and down the country, playing a key role in the fabric of local communities.  We are delighted that the Social Care Minister took the opportunity of her visit to the fantastic Karuna Manor Care home ”

Events, both virtual and socially distanced, are taking place throughout many counties in the UK and most certainly within the TLC portfolio. The events include virtual tours of participating care homes, informative seminars, Dementia cafés, teddy bear picnics and much more! Karuna Manor will also be hosting a Chelsea flower show, a nutritional cooking session with Head Chef Elton, and more.

Jarini standing in her home, Karuna Manor Care Home, without support

Jarini Ranmal was born in Uganda in 1949 and raised there until she was 10 years old and left for England. She enjoyed her student life in London and studied at Ealing College. During her working life she worked tirelessly at Gillette for 40 years as a Machine Operator.

Jarini joined the TLC family in September 2017, when she moved into Karuna Manor Care Home after having a stroke. Unfortunately, the stroke left Jarini with limited mobility and relying on the support of a wheelchair. Having moved in Karuna Manor Care Home, Harrow, our dedicated teams were able to support Jarini with regular physiotherapy in a secure and comfortable environment which resembled her cultural heritage.

About Karuna Manor

Karuna Manor is a luxurious care home, part of the TLC Care group, based in Harrow with a focus on spirituality and quality of life. The home offers private en-suite rooms, a magnificent temple, paying homage to all faiths, and delicious Gujarati food. The attention to detail at Karuna makes for an unmatched award-winning experience.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, TLC Care invested in enhanced protocols to ensure the safety of the team and residents, which meant external members were unable to enter the home. The team of nurses and carers at Karuna Manor came together to continue Jarini’s exercises, to build her strength in order to be able to walk.

Ruth Kigaa, Home Manager of Kuruna Manor, was delighted with the news of Jarini and stated “Jarini is a very special person, and she has earned those steps herself through the sheer determination from her and the team who supported every day. After a very tough year, this has brought some real joy to all of us at Karuna Manor and we hope this long continues well into the future!

It is expected that she will walk further over time as the muscles continue to strengthen. This remarkable woman has literally taken everything in her stride and has shown great courage and passion which as a result has encouraged other residents to be more active. As other residents have seen Jarini walking around the home, they too are now willing to do regular exercises, which would have once been out of their comfort zones.

Jarini wanted to give a special thanks to Connie, Monica, Vasanta, Harsha and Mahesh who are the allocated carers on her floor as “they always take me for walks; are very polite and gentle”.

The brother of Jarini, Harish, also added, “In additional to carers, we would like to thank all the team members at Karuna Manor, all of whom do great work in looking after ALL the residents.”

Lorna Badrick, COO at TLC Care, commented: “The residents are truly the heart of our family at TLC Care. The support, compassion and care from our team is something we are all incredibly proud of; and in this case supported the physical health of a resident at Karuna Manor Care Home. Jarini’s story is one that reminds us all why we are so passionate about the work we do. It’s a genuine pleasure to see her regain strength and confidence in herself”.

Despite lockdown and COVID-19 restricting many typical celebrations, Karuna Manor’s residents were able to celebrate Diwali in the home and with their loved ones.

As relatives were unable to visit their loved ones this year, our residents sent Diwali cards to family members as a way of staying close to them. Karuna Manor’s prayers were also streamed live on Facebook so that relatives and the community could still be part of the events.

Our wellbeing team decorated the home with prints, candles, tealights and Diwali decorations so that the residents were at the heart of the festivities. Residents also took a special trip down memory lane by making a selection of local festive dishes such as shakarpara and puri for Annkut prashad, ghugra, Kaju katri and chocolate rolls.

During our pampering sessions, the wellbeing team cut our residents’ hair, painted their nails and applied mehndi. Residents rejoiced in dressing up in traditional clothes and applying make up for their Diwali party. One of our residents, Ms Patel, said she was impressed by the effort made this year despite the restrictions.

Team Lead, Allency Barreto, said that despite not being able to celebrate with her loved ones, she enjoyed celebrating with her residents like every other Diwali.

This special Diwali was thoroughly enjoyed by all our residents and team members, and we look forward to more festivity within Karuna Manor over Christmas to come.
