The children of Oaks Nursery joined residents of Cherry Hinton Care Home, Cambridge for a picnic in the garden. The nursery often visited residents before lockdown in March 2020 and this celebration marked the first visit back into the home. Organised by Community Development Manager, Amber Christou, the children were invited into the home with teachers from Oaks Nursery for sandwiches, juice and fresh fruit prepared by the home’s Chef.

TLC Care takes pride in its intergenerational activities and is proud to showcase the values of truth, love and compassion to all ages within communities around the homes. The Cherry Hinton team took advantage of the clear weather and invited the nursery pupils in during Care Home Open Week 2021. The children brought their favourite teddies, stories and blankets to share with the residents for the picnic.Residents of Cherry Hinton were thoroughly delighted to watch them play in the garden and enjoy the sunshine. The team set up games of giant connect 4 and snakes and ladders before a group story telling activity and closing the picnic with a sing-a-long.

Wellbeing Lead at Cherry Hinton, Seweryn noted; “It was so lovely to welcome children from the Oaks Nursey again after such a long period of time. All of the residents enjoyed watching children playing in the garden and brought so much joy and positive vibes which is exactly what they needed after such a tough year.”

Additionally, a resident-favourite activity is tending to the beautiful gardens within the home, and so the Oaks Nursery children joined the residents in painting plant pots which will be used to decorate the garden pathways. The Cherry Hinton residents were thoroughly delighted with meeting their new friends and have continued to reminisce over the fun and games they had. Since then, the nursery and home have agreed to continue their visits from September in the new academic year, with regular visits to continue fun and engaging community events which create meaningful memories.

Amanda, Headteacher of the Oaks Nursery shared: “We’ve been really excited to come and visit the care home again today after so long. The last time we came here was March 2020…Before the pandemic we came regularly and we are really hoping we can continue to do this, some of the children have never been to the care home so they have been really excited for it.

We haven’t done many school trips this year and this is one of the first. Some of the children haven’t been able to see their grandparents during the pandemic due to them being overseas so it’s really nice that they have been able to come for the picnic and be around the elderlyIt’s also been lovely to paint the flower pots for the care home garden and it has been a lovely way to get involved when we haven’t been able to visit”.

Lorna Badrick, COO, commented: “It is so heart-warming to see the children from Oaks Nursery spending time with the residents of Cherry Hinton. These wonderful intergenerational activities have been long overdue since the beginning of lockdown and it is clear from the fantastic photos that the children, residents and team members thoroughly enjoyed the reunion. As TLC prides itself on a holistic approach to nurturing the residents in our care, the surrounding community is incredibly important to us and I would like to pass on my commendation to the Cherry Hinton team for organising such a fun event which showcases what TLC is all about”.

Ends.

Cherry Hinton Care Home, Cambridge, had a fun filled week whilst raising money in aid of Alzheimer’s Society. Living by the TLC Care values of truth, love and compassion, the team came together to support those who are living with Alzheimer’s by hosting a week of engaging events and challenges, suitable for all ages and capabilities.

Shelly Prakash, Home Manager commented: “We are pleased to celebrate Dementia Awareness Week at Cherry Hinton. The involvement from the team members, relatives and local community was inspiring and really embraced our ‘one team approach’. We are privileged to help contribute towards the work of Alzheimer’s Society”.

The week started off with a virtual seated exercise class that was streamed live to the local community and other care homes. The team, along with the support and efforts of the residents within the home also held a sponsored walk covering 20 mile; 100 years of dance, where we danced and sang through the ages; a wheelchair walk with residents and to top it off we set ourselves the challenge of 24 hours of spin. Taking it in turns, the team at the Cambridge care home came together to ensure that the spin bike wheel was continuously spinning until the 24 hours was up. Special thanks to Inspired Fitness in Waterbeach, who donated their spin bikes to the care home to use for our event. The residents and team at Cherry Hinton Care Home raised an exceptional £606 in total!

Cambridge Manor and Cherry Hinton Care Homes have been spreading the Christmas cheer this year. The Team and residents realised that Cambridge is already the UK’s most unequal city and that this year would be incredibly difficult for many in our community.

Cambridge Manor and Cherry Hinton Care Homes have been collecting toys for low-income families, and unwell children spending their time in Addenbrookes, during the festive period.

Maria-Grace Smith (Community Development Manager) for Cambridge Manor was invited on to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire to spread the message about the toy drive initiative across the county’s airwaves:

We have received wonderful donations from Team Members, Family members and the community – one Cambridge Company, Velocity Commerce, donated over £500 of Lego which is just fantastic.

We have also been raising money on our JustGiving site and this, along with cash donations, has raised over £600 – the Cambridge and Cherry Elves will be catching a sleigh to local businesses to buy lots more presents very soon indeed.

Our toys will be split among the Cambridge Giving Tree which supports children all over Cambridge, and Addenbrookes Hospital for the Children’s ward.
